Congratulations to Lindsey Casper,a St.Gabriel 7th grader who was informed that she was in the top ten out of thousands in a poetry contest sponsored by Creative Communications located in Utah.This is indeed an honor. Lindsey will receive a 50 dollar savings bond and her poem will be included in an anthology of winning poems.Congratulations Lindsey!

Wisconsin Teacher Wins 2007 Reading Instruction Award

NEWARK, DELAWARE, USA Linda Markovich, a fourth grade teacher at Saint Gabriel School in Hubertus, WI, is recipient of the 2007 Regie Routman Teacher Recognition Award, which is presented by the International Reading Association. The award, sponsored by Regie Routman, internationally respected teacher and author, honors an outstanding reading and language arts teacher from a regular K-6 classroom. What distinguishes this award is its reliance on the writing the teacher does as a means to reflect on and improve his or her teaching and learning process.

Markovich, who has been teaching for 11 years, excerpted her journal to catalogue her professional growth. As the only reading teacher for fourth graders, she has faced the full range of challenges common in many classrooms: how to motivate students to read, what to do to help students who struggle with comprehension or demonstrate other reading difficulties, how to get support from home, and how to adjust teaching when reading programs are updated. Throughout it all, she demonstrates a commitment to each student s success, an awareness of the most current literature about best practices, and a willingness to try new techniques. In her own words, Markovich is  on a constant quest for the perfect way to teach reading to every student, conveying in simple terms the need to differentiate instruction so that each child succeeds.

Markovich will receive this award and the $1000 prize on May 16 at the International Reading Association s 52nd annual convention, held this year in Toronto, Ontario.

St. Gabriel School Student Adam Hastings Chosen as Kemps 2006-07 Extraordinary Student
Kemps Donates $500 In Cash To St. Gabriel School
On Behalf Of Its Extraordinary Student

Minneapolis, Minn. April 26, 2007  Kemps, a leading dairy company in Minnesota, and originator of the milk fund raising program for education, has named Adam Hastings, a sixth grader at St. Gabriel School, as a finalist in Kemps first-ever Extraordinary Student search. In recognition of this honor, Kemps is donating $500 in cash to St. Gabriel School during a  giant check presentation slated for 2:00 p.m., Wednesday, May 9 at the school, which is located in Hubertus, WI.

Adam is being recognized for creating and managing a Web site called  Kids Think Link, which engages students to use and reinforce the skills and knowledge in math, creative writing, spelling, science and computer technology. Adam spends an average of seven to ten hours every weekend updating the content on the site and works over the summer to develop new web pages and layouts. St. Gabriel s principal has been so impressed with the site and how engaged students are with  Kids Think Link that Adam has spoke before the institutions faculty to explain how students can benefit from using the Web site.

Kemps launched the Extraordinary Student search last December to recognize the volunteer efforts of K-12 students.  As a society, we often don t hear about the unselfish acts young people perform to better their communities, commented Rachel Kyllo, Kemps marketing vice president.  Paying tribute to the contributions of giving students like Adam through this Extraordinary Student search helps Kemps illustrate our ongoing support for education and community spirit.

In addition to earning $500 for his school, Adam will receive free Kemps milk for a year.

Kemps received hundreds of nominations for its first ever  Extraordinary Student search for the 2006-07 academic year. Altogether, 18 winners were selected: Three grand prize winners  one each from grade school, middle school and high school  earning $5,000 in cash for their schools, and 15 finalists, each receiving $500 cash awards for their schools.
